Anatolian Shepherd Dogs
These dogs are bred to be livestock guardians. Our observations are consistent with how the AKC describes them. We highly recommend you review the breed details to make sure that their build and personality fit with your situation.

They are patient with family and fierce guards of what they consider theirs. Anatolians are very smart and independent. This makes them great guards. They can distinguish what animals and people belong and those that don’t belong. However, as far as obedience goes, they do as you ask, as long as it is in line with what they want. If they have other ideas, they will ignore you.

They guard first and foremost with their presence. If looking intimidating does not work, they will bark. Barking is not their go-to alarm system like it is in the Great Pyrenees. Anatolians are not much for grand warnings - they take care of business to protect their charges.

All LGDs can roam if they believe there is something on the other side of the fence they should investigate, woo, guard or kill. Our feeling is that things that contribute to roaming may include not having enough space to accommodate the dog. Also, intact animals will roam for dating opportunities. If something concerns the dog on a security or territory basis, they will feel the need to investigate.

In order to set them up for success, we require an application through Good Dog and closely review your setup and plans to make sure the dog will be a good fit. We strongly prefer to place dogs in working situations. If they do not have animals to guard, they will guard you or your chihuahua or whatever they decide needs close supervision. This often creates conflict for the unwilling ward. We will not place dogs for use as service animals or as pets with people who do not have prior experience with the breed.
